Saya kuliah pelayaran bukan dari kalangan keluarga kaya raya pada umumnya. Untunglah saya punya kawan yang sangat baik, sebut saja Capt. Eko Budi Sanyoto. Di saat jaman saya susah dulu kawan tersebut rela meminjamkan sebagian uangnya untuk saya pergunakan mengambil sertifikat GOC. Pokoknya karena salah satu jasanya lah saya bisa menjadi seperti sekarang, kebaikanmu selalu saya ingat kawan, kita bersaudara walau tak sedarah.
Selama di atas kapal, saya cukup akrab dengan salah satu kru Turki yang kebetulan seorang electrician. Suatu ketika saya marah lantaran dia menepuk-nepuk kepala saya, saya sangat tersinggung waktu itu. Ternyata saya salah paham, karena budaya orang Eropa kalau tepuk-tepuk kepala itu artinya sayang.
